Shared clinical devices and clinicians' own phones, held to the same standard

A hospital or trust runs ward iPads shared by every shift, clinical laptops that hold patient data, workstations in corridors and clinicians' own phones with work email on them. Purple MDM encrypts and proves the lot, resets shared devices between users and treats a clinician's phone as personal.

What you are up against

Patient data on devices that move

  • Shared devices on every ward

An iPad left signed in by the last nurse, or a workstation in a corridor, is patient data within reach of anyone passing.
  • Clinicians' own phones

Work email and messaging on personal phones that nobody will enrol if it feels like surveillance.
  • Proving it

Information governance wants evidence that every laptop with patient data is encrypted, and a list, not a promise.

FAQ

Questions we hear from teams like yours

Can we prove every laptop with patient data is encrypted?

Yes. The compliance report over time lists encryption status per device, and the audit log records every recovery key view.

What can the trust see on a clinician's own phone?

Only the work area. The transparency page lists what the trust can and cannot see, and a wipe removes the work area and nothing else.

Do ward iPads need to be signed out between users?

Return to Service resets a shared iPad between users, keeping its apps and settings, so the next clinician starts clean.

Does Purple MDM manage medical devices?

Purple MDM manages Macs, iPhones, iPads, Windows PCs, Android devices, Chromebooks and Linux machines. Medical and building devices join the network on their own keys through Purple Access.
