BYOD and personal devices

Personal phones with a work area, and a plain page saying what IT can see

People will use their own phones for work whatever the policy says. Purple MDM enrols a personal iPhone or Android phone into a separate work area, keeps work data and apps there, and gives each person a plain page showing exactly what IT can and cannot see on their device.

What you are up against

Why BYOD goes wrong

  • It feels like spyware

People refuse to enrol because nobody can tell them what IT would see, so work email ends up on an unmanaged phone instead.
  • A wipe takes the photos

A leaver's phone is wiped whole, or nobody dares press the button and the work data stays.
  • Policy by exception

Every personal device is an argument about which settings apply, and the answer is different each time.

How Purple MDM is set up

How Purple MDM handles a personal device

  • A separate work areaPersonal iPhones enrol through Apple's User Enrollment and Android phones get a work profile: a managed area for work apps and data, apart from the rest of the phone.
  • A transparency page per personGenerated from how the device enrolled, it lists what the organisation can see and do on the device, and what it cannot, in plain English.
  • The retire button is theirsOn a personal device the person can retire it themselves. A wipe removes the work area and nothing else.
  • The same checks, scoped to workCompliance checks and device health apply to the work area, and feed Purple Access like any other device.

The fleet

Who gets what on a personal device

  • The personA plain page showing what IT can and cannot see, and a retire button that is theirs.
  • ITWork apps, their settings and the work area's compliance, and nothing personal.
  • Personal iPhonesApple's User Enrollment, with work data kept apart from personal data.
  • Personal Android phonesA work profile, with apps from managed Google Play.
  • The networkThe work area's health shared with Purple Access, like a company device.
  • LeaversThe work area removed, the phone and its photos untouched.

FAQ

Questions we hear from teams like yours

Can IT see my messages or photos?

No. On a personal device Purple MDM manages a separate work area. Personal apps, photos, messages, browsing outside the work area and location are not visible to IT, and the transparency page says so.

Can IT wipe my personal phone?

A wipe of a personal device removes the work area and nothing else. On a personal device the person can retire it themselves.

Does a personal phone still have to pass compliance checks?

The work area does: passcode, OS version and jailbreak or developer mode. Where it fails, the person is told why in plain English, and with Purple Access the device can be kept off the staff network until it is fixed.

Which platforms support a work area?

iPhone and iPad through Apple's User Enrollment, and Android through the work profile.

Other use cases

  • Zero-touch deployment

Devices enrol, configure and join the network at first switch-on, with no IT visit.
  • Shared and frontline devices

Carts, shift devices and kiosks that reset between users and carry a device policy.
  • Device health and network access

Device health feeds Purple Access: a failing device is isolated, fixed and let back.
